Free eBook! Proof of Grace

“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9

So much in our life tells us that it is our performance that makes us who we are. This is especially true in the lives of kids. Think what they hear from chore charts, report cards, standardized tests, recitals, and athletic banquets. Performance—work and reward—is one of the basic structures of our lives. As a result, kids grow up thinking, “I am what I am because of what I do… or because of what I’ve failed to do.” Have you ever thought about how different this “message of performance” is from the Bible’s message of redemption? In 1 Corinthians 15:10, the Apostle Paul says, “I am what I am by the grace of God.” Proof of Grace is Sojourn’s third children’s book. It is about reclaiming the Bible’s teaching about grace for the next generation. The book is written on a 1st or 2nd grade reading level, and we intend for it to speak to children on two levels.

First, Proof of Grace is a teaching book. We want our kids to embrace and remember the Bible’s teaching about grace so that they can combat the performance messages they hear. We want them to remember, as the apostle Paul said, that it is God’s grace that makes believers who we are. We’ve designed this book as a tool to aid in remembering. The PROOF acrostic can be memorized, and we’ve provided Bible and doctrine memory work along with family devotional ideas for each point on pages 19- 23. Information about a corresponding curriculum written for our church community’s study of Ephesians 1-2 can be found at sojournkids.com/proof

Second, Proof of Grace is a pirate adventure about a boy named Jesse whose parents send him on a scavenger hunt. It is an adventure book, because God’s grace should overwhelm us. It should fill us with a sense of adventure and wonder. Life is filled with dark passages. But though God’s ways disturb us now, they will one day be found delightful. God’s message of sovereign love overtakes us when we need it most. When our kids are battling against sin and suffering, they need a picture of God’s love that overcomes their rebellion and their circumstances. Our hope is that they will never cease to be amazed that God reached down and saved scallywags like you and me. We want them to uncover the gospel as the greatest treasure so that they can’t stop talking about the mystery and beauty of what they’ve discovered.

Thursday Book Club: What is the Church?

Today’s Thursday Book Club involves a bit of self-promotion.

What is the Church? is Sojourn’s second children’s book, written by Mandy Groce and Bill Bell.   What Is The Church? was written to teach preschool children that the church is not a building. It is a people that God has called together and made alive by faith.  The book teaches the five Christian identities which every believer should embody.  This is the concept behind the second part of our current Faith-Mapping sermon series.  And you can see it explained simply in this Sojourn Vision video from last year:

I’m highlighting the book now, because this is a great way to teach the concepts you’re learning in Sunday Gatherings to your kids when you are at home.  Get the book.  Pick up a copy at the book table on Sunday or purchase it online here. Then, talk to your kids over the next few weeks about how you’re learning to be a worshiper, family member, servant, learner, and missionary.

Kids Books for Father’s Day!

We hope you’ll be able to worship with us this Sunday, which is Father’s Day. We’ll give a free copy of our children’s book Our Home is like a Little Church to all dads who attend. This book teaches about biblical fatherhood, so bring your dad or any dad you know.

We’ll have a brand new SojournKids book at the book table as well.  Mandy Groce and Bill Bell wrote What Is The Church?, with illustrations by Tessa Janes, to teach our children that the church is not a building — it’s a people that God has called together and made alive by faith.  You can get this book for $5. Copies of Our Home Is Like A Little Church are available for the same price.

What Is the Chuch? A new Sojourn children’s book tackles this difficult question.

Earlier this week, I ran across a blog post that got me a little excited.  Dr. Ray Van Neste, of whom I am a big fan, reviewed a simple little book from Concordia Publishing aimed at young children to encourage their engagement in the worship of the church and explaining key parts of the Lutheran worship service.  In the book, comment is made on  prayer, congregational singing, Bible reading, preaching, communion, baptism, and giving.  Van Neste noted, “In a day when the church is so often minimized or disparaged, it is great to see a children’s book like this… I would like to see my own denominational publisher produce something similar in a Baptist vein.”

Well, I’m pleased to announce that a similar book is in the final stages of production here at Sojourn.  Mandy Groce and Bill Bell (with illustrations by Tessa Janes) have been working on a new book  for our kids that asks the difficult question What is a Church? Here are some of the opening lines:what is the church_right

Let’s say you ask me, “What’s the church?”
I’d say, “Not what, but WHO!”
The church is made of people just
Like me and just like you.

The church is not a place we go
To meet on special days.
It’s us—it’s he and she and we—
Called out to bring Christ praise.

God’s church is built of human hearts—
Men, women, girls, and boys.
By faith we’re made God’s family
And that’s why we rejoice!

Unlike other books on the church, this book does not answer the question by telling what the church does (preaching, communion, baptism, discipline)–although those things are essential and should not be ignored.  But this book begins with who we are–our identities as a church.  As a gospel people, the church is a believing family, a community of worshipers, servants, learners, and missionaries.  Stay tuned for more as the project continues.
