Grade School Bible Lesson for Baby Dedication Sunday: Jesus Welcomes Children

Jesus Welcomes Little Children
Matthew 19:13-15, 1 hour & 20 minutes, targeted at grades 1-5

Lesson Overview

This week in SojournKids, we will study Matthew 19:13-15, and we will learn that:

  • Jesus’ said, “Let the little children come to me.”
  • Jesus loves and welcomes little children.
  • Jesus gives his kingdom to needy people who cry out to him.

People brought little children to Jesus for a blessing, but the disciples said, “Stop.”  They thought that Jesus was too busy for little children.  But Jesus loves and welcomes little children.  He said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them.”

Jesus taught the disciples, “The kingdom of heaven belongs to people who are like these children.”  Little children know that they need help.  They cry out for help with all kinds of things—eating, getting dressed, walking across a street.  Jesus wants all people to be needy like children.  He wants all people to cry out for him. Why family ministry?

Check out this podcast from Tony Kummer with Sojourn East member, Dr. Timothy Paul Jones:

Will new interest in family discipleship somehow distract churches from doing kids ministry? Does embracing family ministry require your church to add new programs?

These are common concerns for many church leaders.  This podcast explores those issues with Dr. Timothy Paul Jones. He is a teacher and writer who has studied these topics in depth. You can learn more about him from his biography page at Southern Seminary.

Faith, Work, and Your Kids

Too often, kids get the wrong idea about calling. They begin to think the only way to serve God is to become an one of the three Ms when they grown up: Minister, Missionary, or Married to one of those. While we should honor these religious vocations, children need to know that God calls people to many other important vocations.
