Halloween for the Christian Family?

Halloween raises a lot of questions.  Should we see this weekend as an incredible opportunity to build relationships with neighbors and the community-at-large, or should Halloween be something that Christians stand against or hide from?  Should we react against Halloween like it’s a vampire and we need to hold up a cross, or can we engage Halloween as a cultural celebration that can be redeemed for God’s glory?  In this article, we’ll take a look at three questions: (1) Is Halloween evil?  (2) Can my kids handle it?  (3) Got any good ideas?  Here goes: Continue Reading…

A Night At The Movies

With movies playing such a large roll in American culture Christians always have something to say about the film industry and the new releases that hit the big screen every weekend. It seems like much of it is complaining. Some of that is valid, but sometimes I think we should take ourselves to task.  If you have children, it is your job to check out the film before you to to the movie.

In how many persons does the one true God exist?

“3 Is The Magic Number” is a Schoolhouse Rock classic.  It last aired on TV in 1985.  The Kennedy family has been listening to Elizabeth Mitchell’s version on her album, You Are My Sunshine for a few weeks now.  She leaves out the multiplication tables.

On February 5th, Mark Harper showed this video at the Children’s Pastors’ Conference (CPC) in San Diego, CA.  I am not attending (maybe next year), but I’ve been following closely through Twitter. Watch the song and listen to the mention of the Trinity; faith, hope, and charity; and a man and a woman having a baby. Ryan Frank (@r_frank) of KidzMatter asked, “What would happen if this aired today on children’s television?  Harper’s message encouraged children’s pastors’ to renew their commitment to teaching children a biblical worldview.  Word.

One simple way to teach children basic bible truths is to use a series of questions and answers with Scripture references.  This is called a catechism.  I’ve put together a revision of the Catechism for Boys and Girls for our parents at Sojourn to use.  Here are the three questions (#s 6-8) on the Trinity:

6. Are there more gods than one? No.  There is only one true God.
(Deuteronomy 6:4; Jeremiah 10:10; Mark 12:29; Acts 17:22-31)

7. In how many persons does this one true God exist? In three persons.
(Matthew 3:16-17; John 5:23; 10:30; 14:9-10; 15:26; 16:13-15; 1 John 5:20, 2 John 9; Revelation
1:4, 5)

8. Who are they? God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
(Matthew 28:19; 2 Corinthians 13:14; 1 Peter 1:2; Jude 20-21)

Child Safety Tattoos

I came across these child safety tattoos while researching security procedures recently.  I thought I’d pass on the information about this new product to all you parents.  You really can’t get much more SojournKids than a temporary safety tat.  Maybe one day we’ll be printing out these instead of security stickers at the check-in on Sundays.
